Documentary on choreographer Pina Bausch and the Wuppertaler Tanztheater, filmed in the course of rehearsals for a new work, Walzer. Selected days of rehearsal, presented with a minimum of interpretive narration, show Bausch and the company working on creative exercises as the piece gradually takes shape. Walzer, which was first performed in Amsterdam in June 1982, is not seen in its entirety in this documentary. Performance and rehearsal footage of an earlier work, Bandoneon, are seen at the opening of the documentary. In order to create a sense of the general milieu of Wuppertal, the filmmakers also include scenes of the town, interviews with factory workers, and a pre-recorded reading by German writer Peter Weiss.
