Dividing the country caused Catholics and pro-French northerners to flee south where Ngo Dinh Diem had become president with United States support. In 1960, the National Liberation Front appeared as an effort to overthrow the South Vietnamese government. The number of United States advisers increased and in 1963 Diem was overthrown by the Right.
